I have been following the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing on NBC and the related medal count on Bloomberg. The medal count chart 👆 seems to suggest correlations between the total number of medals won and factors like population and affluence. The consistently overwhelming observation over the years is that most of the super athletes come from democratic nations. Winter olympic events and coverage do not focus on this unmistakable fact. Sports and politics are most of the time inseparable even when claims to the contrary dominate. For the benefit of athletes and fans everywhere, shouldn't the athletes be permitted to express their feelings about the effect of democracy, civil rights and civil liberties on their sport and on their performance?
